What do I vì chưng if my details were exposed in the Facebook data trove?

Attackers can use your Facebook-associated phone number or gmail address khổng lồ, for example, encourage you lớn cliông xã on a malicious link khổng lồ steal more details from you, or triông xã you inkhổng lồ transferring money. You can’t change your number easily, so you should remain vigilant for attempts over the coming weeks.

They can also combine details to lớn attempt identity theft, or use your gmail try khổng lồ hachồng other accounts using easy-to-guess passwords.

With this in mind, if you have been exposed in the leak, or you use an easy-to-guess password, or one that is doubled up elsewhere, it’s a good idea lớn change your Facebook password. “The easiest way lớn boost security would be to change your Facebook password but it is always a good idea to sift out old data, make more things private and even purge out connections,” says Jake Moore, cybersecurity speciadanh sách at ESET.

Moore says it is “vital” lớn implement two factor authentication “as an extra layer of protection as it will help keep threat actors from gaining entry khổng lồ vulnerable or exposed accounts.”

In order to activate this, go khổng lồ your Facebook security settings & enable two factor authentication, ideally not through SMS as this can occasionally be used to lớn an attacker’s advantage. Instead, try an authenticator ứng dụng such asAuthy, or a physical security key.

You can also change your Facebook password và choose to lớn receive sầu alerts about unauthorized log ins via your security settings. In addition, use a password manager such as1PasswordorLastPass to help you create & remember strong passwords for Facebook và the other sites you use.

Facebook is not known for its security or privacy, và if you really want khổng lồ be as secure & private as possible, the best option is khổng lồ simply delete your tài khoản. But I accept this isn’t always possible—especially during a pandemic when Facebook is a lifeline khổng lồ reach out khổng lồ friends & family.

Another option—the one I have chosen for myself—that will at least increase your privacy is to delete the phầm mềm on your smartphone. This will prevent some of the tracking that Facebook does, and helps lớn wean you off forever checking the social media site.
